What this episode covers
In this episode, we sit down with Alec, a Cree-Métis student studying Neuroscience, to explore the experiences that have shaped their journey through university. From navigating the Indigenous admissions process and beginning their studies in Psychology to transitioning into Neuroscience and discovering undergraduate research opportunities, Alec reflects on how curiosity, mentorship and hands-on learning have opened unexpected doors throughout their degree. Alec also shares their experience participating in a group study program in Tokyo, where they spent a month connecting with students from around the world, as well as the community they've built on campus with friends and classmates through Philosophy. Joined by Alysha Akins, Coordinator of the Indigenous and Community Recruitment team, this conversation explores identity, culture, belonging and the importance of creating space for Indigenous perspectives in science and on campus. As Alec reflects on changing direction, embracing uncertainty and finding their own community, they offer advice for future Indigenous and first-generation students who may be unsure about their path: it's okay to pivot, try something new and trust that your university journey doesn't have to be a straight line.
