Season 3, Ep. 9: Effects
from Reel Poppycock · host Reel Poppycock Productions
Reel Poppycock ponders the potential side-effects of covering the 1979 mega-meta-movie "Effects." This episode is a KC hidden gem pick, and *hidden* certainly describes "Effects," because this film basically didn't exist to be seen anywhere from 1979 until a DVD release occurred in 2005. The *gem* aspect is more up for discussion, because plenty of poppycock was poppin' off all over this picture. But "Effects" has some good going for it as well, and was well ahead of its time in 1979. The filmmakers came from the George A. Romero tree; with director Dusty Nelson, and stars John Harrison, Joseph Pilato, and special effects and make up guru Tom Savini all having worked with Romero before putting $55K together, and making their own movie about a movie within a movie, with maybe even another level of mediation added. Do Ed, Trevor, and KC think the filmmakers succeeded on their passion project?
