Season 4 Podcast 90 “The Stories of the New Testament, Matthew Ch 8, Vs 16-34”We offer a weekly podcast, Monday thru Friday. Each Friday we discuss the New Testament, King James’ Version. We are now on Matthew Chapter 8, the Sermon on the Mount just concluded.In, Podcast 85, we discussed Matthew 8: 1-15, in which the Savior cured the leper, the Centurian’s servant, and Peter’s mother-in-law. In verses 16 thru 34 the miracles continue.When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.We always think of Christ as taking away our sins, but it is clear here that not only did he bear our sins, but he also took upon himself our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. Why is that important to know? We really don’t know all of the miracles that Christ performed, but every miracle recorded has a message for us. It is unlikely that anyone listening to this podcast has been spared from infirmities or sicknesses. Many call upon Christ for his healing powers, and many have witnessed personal miracles in their lives.Christ did not just heal infirmities and sicknesses. He took upon himself our infirmities and our sicknesses meaning that he suffered every bit as much as we suffer and that includes headaches and toothaches and cancer and every other ailment. He felt our pain that he may have empathy for us in our anguish. When we cry out to God, he understands. The only way he can have empathy for us is to suffer as we suffer, whether it is sin or sickness or weakness or temptations or desires or appetites or passions. It is not an easy concept to grasp. For one thing he was sinless, yet he suffered for our sins; for another, he only lived to about age thirty-three or thirty-four, meaning he was in the prime of health, yet he suffered and died for us. The scope of the atonement is as broad as the pain of all humanity. What did Luke mean when he said of Christ in Gethsemane?LUKE 2244 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.Christ shed his blood not only on the cross of Calvary, but also in the Garden of Gethsemane. Without gethsemane the cross would have been meaningless for it is there in Gethsemane where his blood spilt on the ground like sweat that he took upon himself the sins of the world. In gethsemane he suffered for our sins. On the cross he died for our sins and in the tomb he was the first fruits of the resurrection thus bringing about the resurrection of all mankind. His mission was to bring about our immortality and our eternal life with the Father.Also remember Christ’s response when the woman with the issue of blood touched his garments and was immediately healed.Luke 8And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
