Do not adjust your radio. The fault is not in the transmission. What you can hear is the sound of something shifting behind the ordinary world. A door settling in an empty room. A footstep arriving before the foot. A familiar voice pausing for just long enough to become someone else. You are on the threshold of a dream, perhaps a nightmare. Behind you lies the reassuring architecture of everyday life. Streets that lead where they led yesterday. Clocks that move obediently forward. People who answer to the same names each morning. You have trusted these things because they have repeated themselves. But repetition is not proof. It is merely a habit reality has acquired. Tonight, that habit is about to be broken. You are about to enter a place where certainty has worn thin, where coincidence has begun making plans, and where the impossible no longer waits to be invited. Listen carefully. Not to the loud sounds. Not to the warnings. Listen for the quiet interruption. The missing word. The second knock when there was no first. The thought that enters your mind already knowing its way around. Do not be alarmed if something seems familiar. That may only mean it has happened before. Do not be reassured if nothing seems familiar. That may mean it has already begun. Somewhere beyond this signal, the world is continuing without you. Another version of this moment is unfolding with one small difference. Perhaps you made a different choice. Perhaps you were never there to make it. Perhaps the voice speaking to you now is not introducing the programme. Perhaps it is trying to remember how the programme ended. Nothing here is entirely real. But everything may be true. Come on in and take a seat. It’s about to begin. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt much.
