from The Intrepid Birdman Show · host The Intrepid Birdman
You are on the threshold of a dream, perhaps a nightmare. Behind you lies a world constructed largely from things people are quite certain about. The time. The date. Their name. Where they left the car. What their neighbour is doing. And exactly what they meant when they said, “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.” Certainty is comforting. It allows us to cross roads, board aeroplanes, get married, buy houses and eat things from the refrigerator whose labels have fallen off. Without it, civilisation would grind to a halt while everybody stood around asking whether anybody was absolutely sure. Fortunately, people usually are. Even when they shouldn’t be. You are about to enter a place where facts may prove temporary. Where conclusions can arrive before the evidence. Where the person who knows exactly what is happening may be the only person in the room who doesn’t. There are people who believe nothing without proof. There are others who require no proof whatsoever. Curiously, both groups are equally difficult at dinner parties. Tonight we may meet experts. Witnesses. People with plans. People with maps. And possibly one or two individuals who have been assured that everything is perfectly under control. They may even believe it. Listen carefully. Somewhere between what we know, what we think we know, and what somebody confidently told us in the pub, lies that small inconvenient territory known as reality.
