Season 5 Podcast 4 Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queen, Book I, Canto 12 Pt I Episode 38 “Victory.” In last week’s episode, after fighting the dragon for three days, the Red Cross Knight slays the dragon and rises triumphantly. CANTO XIIFaire Una to the Redcrosse knight,betrouthed is with joy:Though false Duessa it to barreher false sleights doe imploy.Overjoyed, Una tells the captain to steer his ship to land. Following the death of the dreadful dragon it is now a safe harbor from offensive storms. After a long and weary journey, Una is now at her journey’s end. She intends to remain in the safe harbor until merrier wind and weather calls her away. BEHOLD I see the haven nigh at hand,To which I meane my wearie course to bend;Vere the maine shete, and beare up with the land,The which afore is fairely to be kend, And seemeth safe from storms that may offend;There this faire virgin wearie of her wayMust landed be, now at her journeyes end:There eke my feeble barke a while may stayTill merry wind and weather call her thence away. The sun had scarcely risen when the last deadly smoke of the fiery dragon had vanished and the watchman on the castle wall had proclaimed that the fearful dragon was dead, that he had witnessed his fatal fall.Scarsely had Phœbus in the glooming EastYet harnessed his firie-footed teeme,Ne reard above the earth his flaming creast;When the last deadly smoke aloft did steemeThat signe of last outbreathed life did seeme Unto the watchman on the castle wall,Who thereby dead that balefull Beast did deeme,And to his Lord and Ladie lowd gan call,To tell how he had seene the Dragons fatall fall.The aged King sprang up and with feeble speed ran to the window to see if indeed what the watchman had said was true. After four years of imprisonment in the castle he opened wide the brass gate to see for himself. He proclaimed joy throughout all his kingdom, Their foe who had plundered his kingdom was now indeed dead. Uprose with hastie joy, and feeble speed That aged Sire, the Lord of all that land,And looked forth, to weet if true indeedeThose tydings were, as he did understand,Which whenas true by tryall he out found,He bad to open wyde his brazen gate, Which long time had bene shut, and out of hondProclaymed joy and peace through all his state;For dead now was their foe which them forrayed late.The trumpets began to sound from the parapet, their echo heard in heaven. They played the tune of happy victory against that dreadful beast who so long oppressed them and held them prisoner in the castle. Everyone in a solemn feast assembled. They rejoiced at the fall of the great dragon from whose eternal bondage they were now released.Here we understand the importance of this final battle. Again, we turn to revelation. Notice that there are two great battles. The first battle is just prior to the Millennium when the Savior comes to reign on earth for a thousand years.
