SEC Ditching Cupcake Weekend

The SEC is scrapping “cupcake weekend” starting in 2027, ensuring all teams play tough conference foes in the second-to-last regular-season week—no more easy matchups before big rivalry games. With a new nine-game conference slate in 2026, the league’s pushing for higher-quality late-season action. But it’s not just about competition: athletic leaders are sounding the alarm on player welfare, citing brutal scheduling that forces athletes into back-to-back games with little rest. As TV partners push for earlier game releases, the SEC is now balancing broadcast demands with athlete recovery—setting the stage for a more intense, athlete-first late-season in 2027.
