SEC Removing LSU From Conference, Boycotting Lane Kiffin's Tigers After NFL Scandal is New Rumbling

According to a report by Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, high-ranking university executives, presidents, and general counsels representing the other 15 SEC schools have held serious, membership-led discussions regarding extreme retaliatory measures against LSU. The core details of the escalating standoff include: The Flashpoint: The talks were triggered by LSU’s aggressive pursuit of players who signed NFL contracts this offseason—such as former Ole Miss tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive back Zxavian Harris—but are attempting to use state court injunctions to return to college football. The Options on the Table: Frustrated school officials are exploring extraordinary disciplinary actions to protect the conference's newly adopted professional-player bans. These options include individual schools refusing to compete against LSU (boycotting games), placing the Tigers on conference probation, blocking them from SEC championship competition, filing a federal legal challenge, and—at the absolute outer edge—even expulsion from the conference. Membership-Led, Not Office-Driven: Dellenger emphasized that these conversations are driven directly by the competing universities rather than the SEC league office in Birmingham. Next Steps and Timeline: While the discussions are described as serious, no immediate formal action is expected. The broader membership is largely waiting on a pivotal preliminary-injunction hearing in Baton Rouge to see how court rulings shake out regarding player eligibility and whether the SEC can legally enforce its collective rules.
