Secession: The Second Wave

from Historical Controversies · host Chris Calton

Season 3, Episode 7. After Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the “Southern Rebellion,” the Upper South states reconsidered their decision to remain in the Union. As many people saw Lincoln’s call for troops as a usurpation of Executive authority, four more states — Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee — saw themselves as being forced to choose sides. With neutrality no longer an option, they joined the Confederacy. Chris Calton recounts the controversial history of the Civil War.
