Second Bulgarian Empire

In this episode, we explore the rise, achievements, and decline of the Second Bulgarian Empire, which restored Bulgarian independence from Byzantine rule in the late twelfth century and reestablished the country as a major power in southeastern Europe. We examine the leadership of the Asen dynasty, the empire’s shifting relations with Byzantium, the Crusader states, Serbia, and Hungary, and the political and cultural importance of Tarnovo as the medieval capital. The discussion also highlights periods of territorial expansion, religious influence, and literary growth, alongside the internal rivalries, foreign invasions, and regional fragmentation that weakened the state. Finally, we trace how these pressures left Bulgaria vulnerable to Ottoman conquest, bringing the Second Bulgarian Empire to an end and beginning nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule.
