Second Chance A

Originally Aired: October 3, 1938The Lone Ranger #887, "Second Chance A," Jack Bates and his wife Mary are settling down to supper at their small North Texas ranch when Mary mentions a stranger with a frightful scar came by asking about Jack. The news sends Jack into a panic, and his worst fears are confirmed when Lem Holstead appears at the door. Holstead, fresh out of prison, reveals Jack's dark secret: he's really a fugitive named Morton, wanted for murder in Kansas from years ago. Holstead demands Jack sign over his farm in exchange for silence, threatening to collect the thousand-dollar reward otherwise. Jack's carefully built peaceful life with his unsuspecting wife hangs in the balance.In desperation, as Holstead rides away, Jack draws his gun and considers silencing the blackmailer permanently. But the Lone Ranger and Tonto have been watching from a nearby arroyo, and the masked man stops Jack before he can pull the trigger. The Ranger reveals he understands Jack's situation and heard everything, leaving Jack to wonder whether this mysterious stranger will help him or turn him in to face justice for his past crimes.
