Secrets to Continence

from Birth Healing Summit Podcast · host Lynn Schulte, PT

Why does one person experience incontinence and another does not? What is the secret to continence? In today’s episode Lynn discusses a common problem many moms face postpartum, stress urinary incontinence, as she shares what she learned from Taryn Hallam, an Australian physiotherapist in her 2023 Pelvicon lecture. As pelvic health providers, many of us were taught that the bladder can only tolerate so much pressure. We learned that when we cough or have any increase in intra abdominal pressure this increases the pressure on the bladder and increases its internal pressure over the urethra. When the bladder pressure is higher than urethral pressure it creates leakage. Now research is showing something different. Lynn explains what these differences mean in how we assess and treat urinary incontinence and why the protocol for treating the postpartum pelvis has such great results.
