Seeds on Rocky Ground (The Sower, Ep. 02)

As we move forward in our study of Jesus' parable of the Sower, we're going to continue considering one of the great challenges that all crop farmers face - soil quality. Last week, we learned that the activity carried out above the soil had a huge effect on whether or not seeds sprouted and took root. If the soil had been packed down by foot traffic, birds were able to see the seeds and steal them away before they even started to grow. In his second example, Jesus explains that the conditions under the soil also play a major role in how well a crop does. On the surface, soil can look fertile and well-suited for sowing seeds - and can even produce great short term results! But the success of a crop is revealed over an entire growing season, and initial growth doesn't always tell the whole story. This scenario described in the parable gives Jesus' followers some insight as to how they might best examine their own faith. The Christian faith is not a faith that provides short term, superficial results, but instead offers a resilient and deep-rooted hope to people dealing with real struggles in a broken world.
