Seeing Creation From the Moon (The Mark Swartzberg Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

What would it be like to spend more than three days on the surface of the moon? For astronaut and geologist Harrison Schmitt, the last living Apollo astronaut to have walked on the moon, the experience was unforgettable, not only because of the historic mission, but because it offered a remarkable perspective on God's creation. Speaking with Mark on The Mark Swartzberg Show, Schmitt reflected on Apollo 17, the final lunar landing. While many remember the moonwalks, he emphasized that the entire Apollo program was significant, both historically and scientifically. As the mission's geologist, Schmitt and his crewmates explored a valley deeper than the Grand Canyon, spending hours collecting samples and studying the moon's surface. But perhaps the most memorable view wasn't the moon at all. It was Earth. During the three-day journey to the moon, Schmitt watched weather systems shift across the globe and captured the now-famous "Blue Marble" photograph. Looking back, he saw our planet as "a remarkable planet to look at, a product of creation, of course." His scientific background only strengthened his appreciation for the Creator. As Schmitt explained, the more scientists learn about the universe, the more striking its precision becomes. Reflecting on the fine-tuning required for life to exist, he observed that "it is so fine-tuned for the occurrence of life that you almost have to end up thinking of an infinitely intelligent Creator." For Schmitt, scientific discovery and faith are not in conflict. Instead, studying creation points beyond itself to the wisdom of the One who made it. Whether viewed from the surface of the earth or from nearly 240,000 miles away, creation proclaims the glory of God. Schmitt's remarkable journey reminds us that every new discovery can deepen our sense of wonder and gratitude for the Creator who fashioned such an extraordinary universe.
