Vain: (1) having or showing undue or excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements: (2) marked by futility or ineffectualness: Before you pray, ensure that your heart is clothed in humility. You can't hustle God. You can't impress God with your vocabulary. He could not care less about your ability to string together compound-complex sentences. Even if your prayer is a verbal dissertation that would impress the greatest scholars and theologians; if the posture of your heart is vain, God will not hear you. In fact, you have received your reward.
