Seek Right
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
The sermon, titled "Seeking Right," explores how people approach Jesus for the wrong reasons, drawing from John 6 where the crowd sought Jesus not because of the miraculous signs but because they had been fed — pursuing temporary satisfaction rather than eternal life. Fr Thomas challenges us to examine how seriously we truly pursue God's kingdom, illustrating the point through two saints: Saint Paul the Hermit, who gave up his inheritance to seek God in the desert for 70 years after witnessing a wealthy man's funeral, modeling the need to consciously remove obstacles that block our relationship with God; and Saint Macarius of Egypt, falsely accused of fathering a child, who humbly accepted the blame rather than protesting, demonstrating that true humility means surrendering to God and trusting Him to reveal truth. The homily explains that "seeking" God practically means fixing one's mind and heart on Him continually, praying without ceasing, and rejecting spiritual complacency or "bare minimum" faith. God is not lost or hiding from us, but hidden behind the curtains of our own passions and distractions. The saints' extreme asceticism wasn't about earning God's love but a desperate struggle against inner passions to draw nearer to Him.
