SEG 2025 Student Chapter Challenge 2: Copper & Uranium Potential in Latin America

The southern region dominates production, while the north, despite hosting important projects, remains underdeveloped due to socio-environmental conflicts, lack of infrastructure and a historical bias in exploration. Geologist Pedro Reyes proposes three strategies to reverse this situation: expanding exploration in poorly studied areas, analysing geological transitions between epithermal and porphyry deposits, and evaluating new mineralised styles in the north. He also stresses that the success of these projects depends not only on technical aspects, but also on adequate social management.
