Selwyn Senatori - ‘Champagne in the morning’ staat voor vrijheid

Selwyn, geboren in Italië en nu een opvallende verschijning in Amsterdam, staat bekend om zijn scherpe stijl, positieve energie en eigenzinnige kijk op de wereld. Host Joost Hofman spreekt met Selwyn onder meer over thema’s als ego en arrogantie. Hoe ziet Selwyn zijn positie in de kunstwereld? “Ik heb altijd het idee dat ik geen Champions League speel en nog altijd Keuken Kampioen ben. Daar is niks mis mee, ik ben overal geweest in de wereld, ik heb mijn kunst aan iedereen verkocht. En toch heb ik altijd het gevoel dat ik nog moet rammen en maken en presteren.”  Regelmatig verwerkt hij kreten als ‘Champagne in the Morning’ en ‘Out of Office Forever’ in zijn kunstwerken. “Eenvoudige kreten, maar juist daardoor zo krachtig en herkenbaar voor velen. Ze staan voor vrijheid, voor niet willen conformeren. Want we doen allemaal maar wat, we volgen als schapen — maar dat hoeft niet.”Selwyn is vader van vier kinderen en een stuk rustiger geworden sinds hij samen is met Irene. Hij vertelt: “Ik gooi mijn werk nu over een andere boeg. En toen mijn moeder onlangs overleed, viel – gek genoeg – alles op z’n plek. Ik werd rustiger. I’ve been all over the world, I’ve sold my art to everyone. But somehow, I still feel like I have to grind, create, and prove myself.”He often includes phrases like “Champagne in the Morning” and “Out of Office Forever” in his work. “Simple phrases, but that’s what makes them powerful—and relatable. They’re about freedom, about not conforming. Because let’s be honest, most of us are just going through the motions, following the herd. But we don’t have to.”Selwyn is a father of four and has found more peace since being with his partner Irene. “I’ve taken a different approach to my work now. And strangely enough, when my mother passed away recently, everything kind of fell into place. I calmed down.
