Semiconductor Manufacturing: Why US Chip Fabs Aren't Enough
from Silicon To Software
Semiconductor manufacturing doesn't end when a wafer leaves the fab. U.S. chip fabs solve only one part of a much larger electronics supply chain. Here's why substrates, advanced packaging, PCB manufacturing, assembly, and production yield may determine whether semiconductor reshoring actually works. The United States is investing heavily in domestic semiconductor manufacturing. But a semiconductor fab produces processed wafers — not finished electronic systems. In this episode of Silicon to Software, Imran Valiani examines the manufacturing chain that exists between a semiconductor wafer and the finished hardware that reaches a customer. That chain includes wafer testing, IC substrates, semiconductor packaging and advanced packaging, PCB fabrication, electronics assembly, qualification, and production testing. Each stage requires specialized equipment, suppliers, process knowledge, and manufacturing capacity. We examine why IC substrate manufacturing represents a separate supply-chain constraint, particularly for advanced CPU, GPU, HPC, and AI hardware packages. Then we move downstream to PCB manufacturing, where high-layer-count designs, HDI construction, sequential lamination, microvias, registration tolerances, via geometry, material systems, and production yield can dramatically reduce the number of qualified manufacturing sources. The episode also looks at the domestic manufacturing capacity that is being built — including advanced packaging, Ultra-HDI PCB production, and emerging glass-substrate technology — and why the critical metric isn't simply when a factory opens. It's when that factory reaches qualified production capacity at acceptable yield. For hardware engineers, sourcing teams, semiconductor professionals, and technology executives, the distinction matters: A fab is a node, not a supply chain.
