Send Back the Air: Patriarchy, Packing Tips & Polonius Ruins Everything — Hamlet Act 1, Scene 3

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

The studio air is recycled. Our pores are under attack. And before noon, we’re being forced to discuss Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 3, a scene that should come with hazard pay and a formal apology from the patriarchy.Laertes is packing for France and decides his parting gift to Ophelia should be… a lecture. He warns her that Hamlet’s affection is basically seasonal, insists a prince’s “will is not his own,” and then starts policing her “chaste treasure” like she’s a vault with a feelings inventory.Enter Polonius: human pop-up ad, unsolicited life coach, and proud author of the most quoted basic lines in literature. He unloads advice on Laertes (“apparel oft proclaims the man,” “neither a borrower nor a lender be,” “to thine own self be true”), then turns on Ophelia, pooh-poohs her romance, calls her naïve, and forbids her from speaking to Hamlet. Because nothing says “loving father” like banning your daughter from talking to a prince. We whine about:Men warning women while sprinting toward their own freedomPolonius’s motivational-poster wisdom and fashion policingLove treated like a financial scam pitchOphelia being managed like a PR problem instead of a personThe audacity of ending this scene with “I shall obey”Cut the cheese, clutch your pearls, and join us as we demand better air, better fathers, and the right to accept royal “tenders” without a committee meeting.
