Born on this day in 1955 in Washington D.C., American mechanical engineer, science communicator, and television presenter, William Sanford Nye, popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy. On this day, in 1896, in Frankfurt, Germany,  Richard Strauss conducted the premiere performance of his composition  "Also Sprach Zarathustra."  The initial fanfare – titled "Sunrise" in the composer's program notes – is best known for its use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
