Today we follow up on our conversation from last week, which focused on dogs specifically, and welcome another representative from the Naples Humane Society, COO Stephanie Lewis, to talk about adopting cats, hamsters, ferrets, and everything else that doesn't bark.You may be sharing some of the common concerns that the humane society hears all the time, including, "What happens if I can't take care of my pet?", and, "What happens after I'm gone?" The Humane Society of Naples has built-in programming that provides support and options to help, including a mobile clinic and even a pet pantry for food. You won't be left on your own. Fundamentally, every pet can be brought back to the society if it comes to that, but of course their goal is to find you the best match for both comfort and practicality. This is why you should consider becoming a foster home for a pet, on a temporary basis, even as short as a few hours. Pets need a change from the environment of the shelter, and the fostering program is a great way to get a feel for what it would be like having a new friend around the house.If you're thinking about adopting a cat, Stephanie really plants the seed for considering an older cat. Kittens are a terror, as the scratches on Stephanie's arms attest! Ok yes, they are very cute. But an older cat has grown into its personality, and likely wants nothing more than to just relax, sit on your lap and otherwise look after itself.
