Hello and welcome to Weekend Focus, I'm Corey Glue, sure to appreciate you tuning in. Hard to believe that we're close to fall now, especially starting up in a few days. Crazy how fast this year is slow, but on this week's show, Alana Ackerman will join me to talk about a special 5K race that's happening in about a month or so, and we'll revisit the conversation with B.C. Taylor, the son of the late great B.E.
Taylor. We'll see what B.C. has been up to and what to expect from the Christmas show that's coming up at the Capitol in a couple months, so sit back relax and enjoy the show. Thanks for tuning in.
So it's no secret that there are a lot of races here in the Ohio Valley, 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons. There's a pretty good way to get your fix somehow, but there is one race coming up next month that is pretty unique. It's the monsters at the mall, 5K happening Saturday, October 20th at the Ohio Valley Mall, and here to talk about the race a little bit is the race director, Alana Ackerman, Alana, thanks for calling in, I appreciate it. Thank you for having me.
So before we get into the race, I kind of want to tap in to your interest with this race. How did you get involved with racing? Local high school, and at the end of the school year they brought in a committee to talk about the issues that students who are living in poverty face, and something about the meeting. I mean, I walked out of there feeling like I wanted to do something about it.
At the same time, I see on say, K.C. Morrison had been talking to me about wanting to put on a 5K one day, and when I mentioned to him, you know, that I wanted to get involved with helping children who were living in poverty, he came up with the idea of putting together a 5K race. You try to help raise some money for some of the kids in the community. Awesome stuff right there.
So with you being a teacher by day, what are some of the challenges that you've experienced with putting this race together? Because with teachers, I know your day is pretty stacked and then trying to plan a 5K, it's a lot to juggle. As far as the planning standpoint, I actually have been pretty lucky with planning. We started this idea, like I said, at the end of the school year, so as soon as summer break started to hit, that's when we got in contact with United Way and WCOV-9, and we started to reach out to local businesses about sponsorship.
So we were able to get a lot of the scheduling and a lot of the planning taken care of before the school year started. Awesome feeling when everything just falls into place, right? Oh, yeah. Again, talking to Alana Ackerman, the race director for the monsters at the mall 5K, that's happening Saturday, October 20 at the Ohio Valley Mall.
So let's talk a little bit more about the race here. So what sets this race apart from all the others here in the Ohio Valley? There are a lot of awesome events here in the Ohio Valley. We've been making on saying that we've both been racing for a really long time, so we've seen a lot of really cool things at the local 5K.
One thing that I'm really excited about for this race is that with it being close to Halloween, it's going to be a costume race. So even though the costumes are optional, it's still going to be really cool to see everybody out in their Halloween costumes having fun. And also, the race course is going to take place at the Ohio Valley Mall. So a lot of the course will be in the surrounding areas outside, but our tennis line will be inside the mall for the last 100 meters or so of the race.
You'll actually finish right in the box out course. And so an interesting twist to the race route. They're actually going to be in the mall. They're going to be people racing around dressed up as all kinds of crazy people.
So this is definitely something that I've never seen before. So and also the race, it's also a race for a reason. It benefits Coats for Kids and it also benefits an anti-bullying campaign. Tell us a little bit more about that.
Okay, so the monsters at the mall 5K, I'm more partnered with the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley and with WCOB9's Coast for Kids program. So all of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the Coast for Kids program. And then the mall is also having their Fall Festival in Halloween Party for Kids that day. So there'll be a fun costume contest for E to 12 and under.
And they have an anti-bullying campaign that they launch every year. So their big slogan is the Abedee Nada-Bully. So we'll be having a friendship, dash and friendship march for the kids to help raise awareness for that. So again, a lot of Ackerman joining us here on Weekend Focus.
She is the race director for the monsters at the mall 5K, having Saturday, October 20th at the Ohio Valley mall. So how can people register for this race? Okay, so our registration is actually available online at getmeregistard.com. So you can find us at runhigh.com on their race number or if you would like to direct link to the monsters at the mall 5K registration.
It is www.getmeregistard.com slash monster at the mall 5K. Gotcha. And it's important to note that people should register before October 1st because the can't remember up the top of my head. What was the entry fee?
It is $20 on or before October 1st, $25 after a non-race day. Gotcha. So if you want to save a few bucks, register before October 1st, but either way, the money is going to be going towards some good causes. Again, it's benefiting codes for kids.
A lot of times, tell us a little bit more about this friendship dash that'll be going on at the race. Okay, so the friendship dash will be about 100 meter race for kids. Anyone 12 and under is able to participate. The friendship march is actually put on by the Ohio Valley mall.
So they have some fun activity lined up for the kids. They encourage them to bring signs that say things like the about the not a bully. And they'll be that will be taking place in a different area of the mall. Gotcha.
And also, you brought this up a little bit earlier. There's the fall festival and how we party that will be going on at the races. Is there anything you can tell us about that? Well, the fall festival and Halloween party, like I said, the Ohio Valley mall has been putting on this event for quite a while.
So kids age of 12 and under there will be a costume contest. They have some really cool prizes for the kids. And they also have some other fun activities planned. So sure to be a fun time over at Ohio Valley Mall Saturday, October 20th with all the Halloween festivities that will be going on.
And also the monsters at the mall 5k put on by the race director that's joining us here on weekend focus. Alana Ackermann. So Alana, just run through the information one last time if people want to register for this race. All right.
And we are certainly hoping that a lot of people register for this race and they make this race a big time success. So Alana, thank you so much for joining me here on weekend focus and best of luck with everything. Thank you so much. So if you want to get your exercise in, help out a good cause and even do a little something fun with your kids at the same time.
Look no further than the monsters at the mall 5k. Hopefully it's a success for Alana Ackermann and again, I thank her for joining me here on weekend focus. So quick look here at the community calendar. Some of the other things that are happening in the Ohio Valley this month.
Of course, this would have been the weekend where the Stern Wheel Festival would have been happening at Heritage Port, but the Ohio River had other plants. So if that event gets rescheduled, I'll make sure to have somebody from the event join me on the show because it certainly is a good time elsewhere. The Wheeling Farmers Market is still going strong. They still have their market on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m.
to noon at the St. Michael's Parish parking lot. But don't forget about the one they have on Wednesday afternoons at the former Edwood Lutheran Church, one four to six p.m. Whole lot of great local foods and produce available.
So make sure you shop for them while you still can. It all comes to an end at the end of October, so make sure you head on out to the Wheeling Farmers Market while you still can. A couple of things happening this coming Wednesday, First Stop, the Payden City Volunteer Fire Company is holding a fish fry from 3.30 to 6.30. There will also be a lot of great food on hand and lots of nice gift baskets and prizes. So for more information on this auction, call 304-845-0855. So that does it for the community calendar though, there are some events in October that you should put on your radar. If I have enough time on the show, I'll run down with you with them for you.
But until then, if you have a community calendar announcement, if you want to be a guest on Weekend Focus, if you have a show idea, just email me, gorygluget.com. If you have a community calendar announcement, please get it to me at least two weeks in advance that way. I have enough time to get the word out against C-O-R-E-Y-K-L-U-G at iCard Media.com. So a couple years ago, it was certainly some sad news to hear that B-E Taylor passed away.
But at least his son, B-C Taylor, helped us be able to love Christmas once again last holiday season with a tribute show to B-E at the Capitol Theatre. A few weeks ago, mixed 97-3's Jim Conner talk with B-C. We'll learn about what's in the works for this year's show, but we'll pick this one up and learn what B-C's been up to lately. Take a listen.
Well, I've been on the road with a few different artists. My main artist is named Bill Moore and he's starting to really, really take off on Spotify and Sirius XM and playing some major shows for the fourth. We opened up to Carrie Underwood. Before that, we were opening up for Sam Hunt.
We did a run in Europe. We actually just got back from, we did a show in Portland, Oregon opening up for Blake Shelton and Fippel, which was crazy. It flew home two days off and then tonight we leave for about four days. We got a bunch of shows in Wisconsin and Michigan, two major festivals with a private show for the Chicago Cubs in between those.
So it's been a really exciting few months and it's just kind of picking up Steve because his songs are starting to really take notice to his songs and him as an artist. The other thing is he's the closest he and the crew that we work with is the closest thing to working for my dad that I was hearing. So I naturally want to make it work and want to be involved, mostly because it just feels like home. That makes sense.
It's just that the people are never, I'm used to that kind of brotherhood and that camaraderie and I want to do whatever I can to make sure it works. And this is in reference to who you mentioned first, Fillmore? Fillmore, correct. I mean, everyone I've worked with so far has been amazing.
Right. Everybody, maybe I've just been incredibly fortunate to work with all the nice people in Nashville, but for the most part, everyone is just good people. So it makes it easy to rally behind them. Well, yeah, it sounds part for the course because the town Nashville has a great reputation.
Yeah, it has that reeling charm that like that smaller town, everybody kind of knows each other charm with the accessibility of all these major cities, not the mention, all the music. The music is, you know, you can't really find that too many other places in the country. Yeah, it's pretty magical. That's for sure, huh?
It really is. It's like a perfect blend of a bunch of different, it's a perfect blend of like kind of everywhere that I've ever lived. What I love about each spot, there's a little bit of that here. And so it's just been the move here with the best decision I could have made.
So I'm thrilled. Well, you brought a full circle a minute ago with a mention of your dad and of course I mentioned wheeling here. Reflections on the show this past year that you guys put together for Christmas. It was amazing.
Spiritual, it was emotional, uplifting, I think, I think healing in a lot of ways for a lot of people. I know for me. And it was just a real testament, and you and I talk about this, it was a real testament to how much people love my father and how much people love being a part of the show and how much people missed leaving the Capitol, you know, with that joy of Christmas. And I think because of how unbelievably well received it was, that's why we are, that's why we're on the phone today.
I think people missed the show. And I think last year was proof that what he said about the show being bigger than him, being bigger than me, being bigger than everybody on stage because it was more about celebrating the birth of Christ, celebrating the reason for the season, feeling the love. Because it was centered around that, I think that's why it was received so well, even with the star of the show, Midsom, because he did such a wonderful job for 20 years, including everyone, not just the people on stage, but the audience. And it became, it really did become a family affair, you know.
And that was still apparent last year, you know, even probably even more so, because he wasn't there. It really showed like, wow, what he created, what, what was developed over 20 years, it's something really truly special. It showed how much that field of love of Christmas message endured. Absolutely, absolutely.
That's what he stood for. He would be saying that now in the middle of July. You got to feel the love of Christmas all year round. And he lived that.
That wasn't just his slogan. He wrote that song because he believed that song. And I'm just, we talked about this last year, he used to feel not only as a performer and an artist and someone who's trying to continue the show, but as a man. He's the greatest man that I've ever known.
And to try to be like him, you're constantly trying to push yourself to be better. Because again, like not that he doesn't, he didn't have fault, he'd be the first one to say so, but his way of living of just total acceptance and total love and again just celebrating the birth and living accordingly is something to aspire to. And these shows, again, I'm just so unbelievably humbled to just be able to continue them. Well, yes.
And brings us around to the big announcement for this coming year. So tickled today, you're going to keep the show going. And I don't think there was any doubt after success of the last year's show was amazing. Yeah, I mean, you never know.
I mean, I know what I believe. When we announced the show last year, there's always that little bit of like, you know, I get it. I would totally understand if everyone's like, we don't, you know, like your dad's not part of it. We don't really want to be there without him being there.
But that's so the complete opposite of what happened. And again, I think it goes back to, you know, he created something bigger than all of us and people just want to be a part of that. And so after seeing the response last year, and especially after the show and just throughout the year, just hearing like, are you going to do it again? What's going on?
I think that, you know, it was, it definitely, we again never expected to have it continue. But the fact that that is something that can happen, I want it to happen because of how much I love playing these songs and how much joy brings me to to celebrate with everybody that was there last year. I know we can do it again. I want to do it again.
Definitely. A lot of thought went into it. You guys are so talented. What you guys put together was just spot on.
It was just so cool. And so well thought out and well done. You just kind of came away going, you guys are great. And yeah, you just built something to go forward with.
Yeah, it goes back to what they started, what my mother and father started. You know, there's a level of excellence that they have sat. You know, there's a bar that, you know, I would never dream of coming below it. And even without him being there, there's even more of a desire to make sure everything works, works properly, sounds the right way, you know, comes off the right way because that's what he deserves.
That's what the show deserves. That's what the people deserve. You know, and you definitely said it. Everyone on stage is so talented and they're all up there for the right reason.
I'm up there to celebrate my father, celebrate the birth. And that's what came off. You know, it came off with a bunch of people who love each other playing and celebrating, you know, these wonderful songs and this wonderful man and this wonderful holiday. And you know, so it's, to me, what we started last year was something very, very special.
And the fact that there are so many people who want to want to experience it again this year is truly humbling. And I'm so excited. I'm just so excited to be doing it again. There was, there was one moment in the show, one of many that really got me and that was after your mother did her heartfelt introduction to the show.
And that was kind of unexpected, of course. And it was just, oh man, so well received. You could hear a pin drop when she was talking. And it just came from her heart, of course.
And she was so well spoken. And then you came out and said, thanks, mom. Because you just like, whoa. And but then you just felt the, to bring it up, you know, the levity of your comment was just so perfect because everyone was just, and then you came out and said, thanks, mom.
And it just, the smile that it just swept over the whole audience was amazing. And then you went into the rest of the show. It was really, there were many great points, but that just stuck with me. So understated, you know, so understated.
But you were just like, because I was just such a heartfelt dedication that she had there. And then it's your chance, you know, as you're moved in to go out and entertain it, it's like, okay, let's, let's take it a different direction now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you know, and I believe in the audience, you hear her side of everything and what she's going through on a daily basis, you know, and I think, I think it was, I think it was, well, I pray that it was somewhat healing for her to be able to share all of that.
And I know, I know it was unbelievably hard for her to even be involved in the show. Right. And even so, even with her being involved and being sad and just heartbroken, she still, you know, she still put on this unbelievable show and it couldn't happen without her. And, you know, that's just a testament again, to one, the love that the two of them have.
It, you know, they're, they are truly the inspiring couple for me to know like, hey, Triklaub is real. Yes. And there, you know, if you want to make it work and you rely on love, it's going to have, I mean, dad was a huge Beatles fan and, you know, he stood by the all you need is love. He lived that and they're a perfect example of that.
So the fact that she was able to go out there and share her side of it, I was, I was happy that she had the opportunity to do that. And again, you know, none of it, none of it takes me a campaign away. But I think letting people know that that's what she's going through on a daily basis and really just the story of what they went through over the past in years. I think it was very important for her and everyone to kind of have an idea.
Yeah. Well, very, very well done. Okay, we're together today, BC. You want to make it official?
Yes, sir. Me or you? I want you to go forward with what you have, with what you know up to date. What I know up to date is that we are celebrating my father's show on December 22nd, which is a Saturday.
It's called Feel the Love Celebrating a B.H. Taylor Christmas. Tickets go on sale August 10th at 10 a.m. And you can purchase them through the West Bank of Arena.
For anyone who had done it, whoever did it last year, it's the exact same process. Tickets will go on sale on the 10th and you can either call in or go down to the box office just like I'm assuming any other show. But yeah, so we're thrilled. We're absolutely thrilled to be bringing it back on the 22nd.
It's again, it's just so humbling that people want that people want the show. It's wonderful. Now that felt good. That felt great.
It does. It feels nice. It's like everything that's all we could've been trying to make sure everything is set up and good to go and tickets are going on sale to proper ways. And you know, it's just there's an excitement.
There's an excitement just from talking about it. There's an excitement from talking to others about it. And you know, it's just that there's such a positive energy around it right now that I don't know. I'm just enjoying every little aspect of it.
Just because, you know, again, it is a way for me to spend time with that. You know, like I'm around to music. I'm doing what he did so many years so successfully. I'm trying to continue that.
So there's an aspect of his life that I'm starting to somewhat understand in a very small way as far as being somewhat of the focal point of something like this. And of course, I could never ever even come close to what he did and was. But I would be lying to myself if I didn't say I like being able to, the fact that I can somewhat understand what he had gone through as an artist. There's an excitement that I'm experiencing just a little bit of that.
And you know, it'll give us something to talk about one day. Definitely. And you know, on the other side, I'll be in a fan. After what you did last year, there might have been some question marks going in on both sides.
But coming up on this season, after last year, it's going to be amazing. Just looking forward to it already. Oh, same here. Same here.
Absolutely. How are you real quick? Are you doing well? I better than ever, BC.
I love it. There was a few years there where I was all over the place, but this past year, well, probably since that Christmas last year, it's been solid up. Oh, that is so great to hear. Yeah, I'm blessed.
I'm blessed to have people around me and good family and good health now for once in a long time. So it's great for you. Enjoy it. Enjoy it.
We'll do BC and I'll follow you and I can't wait to see you. All right. Looking forward to it. You have a good day, man.
You too. You and your family. All right. Bye.
Bye. So a big thanks to Jim Conner for letting me feature that conversation again. A lot of great stuff in that interview. And it's good to know that we'll feel the love of Christmas once again this all day season.
