September 10: Nottingham Attacks Inquiry and Bukavu School Fire
from Iniaes · host Iniaes
In Britain At the inquiry into the June 2023 Nottingham attacks, Nottinghamshire Police said the killings were not reasonably foreseeable or preventable, despite officers encountering Valdo Calocane 10 or 11 times between 2020 and 2022. The force accepted it failed to execute an outstanding warrant, while Leicestershire Police acknowledged missing an opportunity to identify that warrant after a May 2023 assault report. The inquiry also heard that material concerning alleged explosives research and workplace assaults was withheld until public hearings had ended. The RNLI has advised volunteers to consider not wearing branded clothing after crews faced threats and abuse linked to anti-migrant protests in Dover, Portsmouth and Poole. The charity says lifeboat crews are dispatched by HM Coastguard to emergencies at sea, including small-boat incidents, and has told volunteers to prioritize their safety and report harassment to police. In eastern DR Congo At least 20 people, including primary school pupils, were killed in a fire at a school in Bukavu, according to officials and local media. The eastern city is controlled by the AFC/M23 rebel group. In business Copper prices have reached record highs in New York and London as demand rises for electric vehicles, AI data centers and construction, while mine output declines. Chilean production fell 6.6 percent in the first half of 2026, and tariff uncertainty has encouraged stockpiling in the United States, tightening supplies elsewhere. Higher copper costs could feed into prices for wiring, vehicles and computers. In the European Union The European Commission is preparing tougher import rules targeting illegal and non-compliant goods, particularly products arriving from China through online marketplaces. The proposed changes would make platforms more liable for what they sell, add a market-surveillance fee and centralize enforcement. A separate report says the EU is pursuing reforms recommended by former Italian prime minister Mario Draghi, but too slowly to keep pace with global competitors.
