September 3: Chinese Drone Tariffs and the House Israel Boycott Bill
from Iniaes · host Iniaes
In tech and manufacturing A new 100% U.S. tariff on Chinese drones has taken effect, dividing the domestic drone industry. The measure targets Chinese-made aircraft, but U.S. manufacturers still depend on Chinese components, leaving companies to absorb higher costs or rebuild supply chains that are not easily replaced. In U.S. foreign policy The House has passed legislation that would bar colleges from boycotting Israel or preventing students from taking part in exchange programs there. The bill now faces its next test in the Senate. Donald Trump has suggested that U.S. support for Britain over the Falkland Islands could depend on London’s stance on Iran. Washington recognizes Britain’s administration of the islands while remaining neutral on the competing sovereignty claims, a distinction now being treated more like a negotiating chip. The U.S. has imposed financial sanctions on a grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro and on Cuba’s state-owned foreign trade bank. In Congress A bipartisan House group has introduced a bill to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35 a month for privately insured patients. Similar efforts have repeatedly stalled amid Republican resistance to government-set pricing. Congressional cuts to public-media funding could force rural radio stations off the air, reducing local news coverage and weakening networks used to deliver tornado and other emergency alerts. In Serbia Ratko Mladić, serving a life sentence after a U.N. court convicted him of atrocities during the Bosnian War, was reportedly given military honors in Serbia. The ceremony honored a figure convicted of some of that conflict’s gravest crimes.
