September 5: Nepal Flood Rescues and U.S.-Russia Ukraine Talks

In Nepal Rescuers have found two people alive 10 days after devastating floods, including a Chinese man pulled from a 225-metre tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project and a Nepali woman rescued in Nuwakot. The man was evacuated by helicopter for medical assessment. At least 1,300 people have been reported killed and more than 5,000 remain missing, with search teams still working around hydropower sites where workers may be trapped. In Ukraine and Russia U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian officials before a planned visit to Ukraine. Their trip comes as Russian attacks killed at least five people in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have also been ordered to observe a three-day ceasefire, though reported strikes underline the gap between declarations and events on the ground. In China A mudslide after days of heavy rain in eastern Jiangxi province has killed one person and left 11 others missing. Rescue operations are under way. In health research An NHS trust is joining an international trial of an experimental Alzheimer’s drug for symptom-free middle-aged adults at elevated risk of the disease. Researchers will test whether treating people before memory problems begin can delay or prevent dementia symptoms.
