It is so good to be together today for worship! In March of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln and congress appointed a National Day of Prayer and Fasting for the country. In the proclamation, Lincoln states: "We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us."Lincoln's words give rightful warning and diagnosis of a danger that lurks within our hearts, lives, church, and world today: the tendency toward pride. Today, we continue our series "Gospel Meets Life" as we focus on James 4:13-17. How does knowing Jesus transform our attitudes of pride? I pray God would remind you of His greatness and goodness today and that you would quickly, gladly humble yourself before Him! We are so glad you're here!
