What is prayer? A. Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies. • Q. 99. What rule hath God given for our direction in prayer? A. The whole Word of God is of use to direct us in prayer; but the special rule of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly called the Lord’s Prayer. 1. Prayer is and acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty in our lives. Ps 139:15-16 2. Prayer is an acknowledgement of a believer’s requirement to confess personal sin and to forgive others. 1 Jn 1:8-10, Mt 6:12-14, James 5:16, Lk 11:4 3. Prayer is an acknowledgement of a believer’s desperate need for God. Lk 22:44 4. Prayer is a response of a true believer. Philip 4:6, Ep 6:18 5. Prayer represents an indescribable intimacy with the creator of the universe. Ps 130:1-8; 120:1 6. Prayer produces God sanctioned results. Jn 15:5-7. Gen 24:12-15, Acts 12:5-7 7.
