Sermon on the Mount — Ask, and It Will Be Given
from LifeWell Messages
Jesus returns to prayer in Matthew 7:7-11 . Ask, seek, knock are not suggestions but ongoing commands: keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. Prayer is treated less as a sprint than a marathon, a persistence that refuses to give up. Two parables from Luke, the persistent widow and the friend at midnight, are read as contrasts rather than comparisons. God is not a reluctant judge or a sleeping neighbor worn down by nagging; if persistence moves the unwilling, how much more will a loving Father respond to his children. The challenge is to pray prayers large enough that God must be in the equation. The hard case of unanswered prayer is faced directly through Paul's thorn in the flesh and Jesus in Gethsemane. Both prayed earnestly and received a no , yet what was given was sufficient grace and deeper conformity to Christ. The closing question is whether the already-answered prayer of the cross would be enough even if nothing else were ever granted.
