Sermon on the Mount — Cheerful Giver

from LifeWell Messages

In Matthew 6:1-4 Jesus opens a second movement of the Sermon on the Mount, turning from outward behavior to inward motive. When the religious leaders gave to the needy, they made the giving visible; Jesus says they had already received their reward in full. The point of giving in secret is less about secrecy than about why we give at all. The sermon reads Jesus alongside Paul's account of the Macedonian churches in 2 Corinthians 8 , who out of severe trial and extreme poverty gave beyond their means and begged for the privilege of giving more. Their generosity flowed not from surplus but from treasure this world could not touch. The tithe is framed as giving God our first and best, an act of faith that reveals what holds first place in a life. The closing turn is honest about the discomfort the topic provokes. Money is treated as a heart issue rather than a budget line, and the call is to a generosity that is cheerful rather than reluctant.
