Sermon on the Mount — The Beatitudes

The opening message of a verse-by-verse series through the Sermon on the Mount argues that the Beatitudes are widely loved and widely misunderstood. Rather than eight separate blessings, the teaching presents them as building blocks of the gospel. From Matthew 5:1-12 , it notes Matthew's deliberate echo of Moses on the mountain, making the case that Jesus is greater than Moses. The Greek word for blessed is read as flourishing. Being poor in spirit means recognizing spiritual bankruptcy; mourning means grieving the cost of sin; meekness means handing the reins over to Jesus. The central claim is that in the gospel the verdict comes before performance: believers are chosen, forgiven, and adopted before they ever perform.
