Sermon on the Mount — The Wise and the Foolish Builders
from LifeWell Messages
The Sermon on the Mount concludes in Matthew 7:24-27 with the wise and foolish builders. The opening therefore reaches back across the whole sermon: the entire teaching is the foundation, and the point is that foundations matter. Drawing on firsthand experience of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, where weak materials and hollow ground collapsed under stress, the message presses how a life built on anything but Christ gives way. A reading of Matthew 16 distinguishes a church built not on Peter but on Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. From there the focus turns to mindset, drawing on Philippians 2 and Christ emptying himself, taking the nature of a servant. Your life is not about you. The closing turn is practical: a foundation in Jesus reshapes focus, speech, and action, so that fruit and even ordinary conversation begin to reflect him. People care little for what we believe until they see those beliefs changing how we live.
