from Redeemer PCA of Overland Park · host redeemerpcaop

Soli Deo Gloria Exodus 20:1-3 May 17, 2026 Pastor Tony Felich ----more---- Exodus 20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying, [2] “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. [3] “You shall have no other gods before me.  Proposition: The Ten Commandments are first and foremost a revelation of the character of Almighty God — they show us who He is before they tell us what to do. Second, they are given to the redeemed as the pathway of grateful worship and covenant allegiance to the God who has saved them. Third, our chronic failure to keep them is itself a mercy — it humbles us, exposes our moral bankruptcy, and drives us again and again to the Savior without whom we have no standing before a holy God.    •    The God of Grace (1-2) “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out.”        •    God’s First Command (3) “You shall have no other gods before me”.                  What the command reveals about God                 How the command is to be obeyed Westminster Shorter Catechism Q. 47. What is forbidden in the first commandment? A. The first commandment forbiddeth the denying, or not worshiping and glorifying the true God as God, and our God; and the giving of that worship and glory to any other, which is due to him alone. Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 104. What are the duties required in the first commandment? A. The duties required in the first commandment are, the knowing and acknowledging of God to be the only true God, and our God; and to worship and glorify him accordingly, by thinking, meditating, remembering, highly esteeming, honoring, adoring, choosing, loving, desiring, fearing of him; believing him; trusting, hoping, delighting, rejoicing in him; being zealous for him; calling upon him; giving all praise and thanks, and yielding all obedience and submission to him with the whole man; being careful in all things to please him, and sorrowful when in anything he is offended; and walking humbly with him.
