A Scandalous Guest (v. 36-38) The sinful woman provides us with a remarkable picture of grace: • A place where she is not welcome (v. 37) • A position where all must see Jesus (v. 36, 38) • A service that is necessary (v. 38, 44) • A gift that is costly (v. 38) • A gesture that is scandalous in its devotion (v.38) B. An Unexpected Parable (v. 39-43) Forgiveness leads to love. The bigger the debt, the more we love the one who rescues us from it. C. An Outrageous Conclusion (v. 44-50) “Your sins are forgiven.” (v. 47, 48) “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (v. 50) III. Application | Why do you do what you do? When you are engaged in mission and it feels like it's a duty or obligation, remember • The motivation for mission is God’s forgiveness and redemption. • We too—like both Simon and the woman—are big sinners, who are loved extravagantly by an amazing God. • We are never going to be very good at taking the gospel to others, if secretly we think they need it more than we do.
