Sermon Series: Stories Jesus Told Sermon Title: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector Bible Passage: Luke 18:9-14 Preacher: Jaxon Brown Date: 26th January 2025, 6 pm As part of our Stories Jesus Told series, Jaxon Brown will explore Jesus’ profound parable of The Pharisee and the Tax Collector in Luke 18:9-14. This parable presents two contrasting approaches to God: one marked by pride and self-righteousness, and the other by humility and repentance. Jesus tells this story to confront the human tendency to trust in our own righteousness while looking down on others. The Pharisee boasts of his religious accomplishments, but his prayer reveals a heart far from God. In contrast, the tax collector, despised by society, humbly acknowledges his sin and pleads for mercy. Jesus declares that it is the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who goes home justified before God. This parable beautifully captures the heart of the gospel. Our relationship with God is not based on our achievements or moral efforts but on His grace and mercy. Like the tax collector, we all stand in need of God's forgiveness. Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, God offers us the mercy we could never earn and the righteousness we could never achieve. By faith, we are justified—not because of what we’ve done, but because of what Christ has done for us. Come and be reminded of the freeing truth of the gospel: God exalts the humble and welcomes all who come to Him in repentance and faith. This is a message that will encourage you to lay down self-reliance, embrace the mercy of God, and rejoice in the gift of salvation through Christ.
