SESSION 118 - Becoming A Master Of Your Impulses

from What Is A Biblical Man? · host Josh Price & Tim Holloway

One of the biggest challenges men in Recovery face is impulse control. The 2 keys to victory in this area are knowing and fully understanding that you can choose not to commit a sin. Second, is knowing why you want to control the impulses to begin with. Thoughts and feelings can create impulses that cause a reaction, and if you act on every whim or trigger, you will end up with extreme suffering.  Impulses affect every area of our frame and being, and without control, you will struggle with being successful. Most times, our areas of struggle are indicators of lack of impulse control.  Being able to control yourself and your words makes it easy for you to keep and maintain relationships. Not everything you think needs to be said or done. With impulse control, you make better choices. At forks in the road, without proper self-control by the Holy Spirit’s help, you make wrong choices.  What is impulse control?  Impulse control is increasing the time between trigger and response. Impulse control is identifying your trigger point and understanding the consequences of potential actions.  Impulse control is analyzing the potential consequences of your impulsive actions, if possible, with another person you are vulnerable with.  If David did this, he would have foreseen the potential effect of sleeping with Bathsheba and would have made a better choice.  Impulse control is to practice impulse override. Impulse control is choosing to respond instead of reacting by aligning to the paradigm of God. Impulse control is to stop, pause, and think.  Impulse control is bringing yourself into a place of clarity, magnifying God within your heart, and bringing yourself to where you realize God’s plans for your life.  We are made biologically with the fight, flight, or freeze response. Different people have their respective reactions to issues in line with biology. However, with God’s Spirit in us, we can analyze the situation correctly and pick the best option for a reaction.  If you want to take your recovery to a new level and take part in the GCR meeting, click on the link. https://mailchi.mp/5539afae2e0d/signup.
