Session 3: James / The Brotherhood
from The Brotherhood Podcast · host Sam Esquivel
5 unique aspects of James:1. Part of the Inner Circle: Along with Peter and his brother John, James was part of Jesus' inner circle. This select group was privileged to witness key moments like the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus' daughter, and Jesus' agony in Gethsemane. His inclusion in these intimate moments suggests Jesus’ deep trust in James.2. Son of Thunder: Jesus nicknamed James and his brother John "Boanerges," meaning "Sons of Thunder" (Mark 3:17). This name reflects their fiery, zealous personalities. An example is when they suggested calling down fire from heaven to destroy a Samaritan village that rejected Jesus (Luke 9:54), showing their passionate, but at times misguided, devotion.3. Ambitious Spirit: James and John, along with their mother, asked Jesus for positions of prominence in His kingdom, seeking to sit at His right and left hand (Matthew 20:20-23). This request reveals both James' ambition and his misunderstanding of the nature of Christ’s kingdom at the time.4. First Apostle to Be Martyred: James was the first of the apostles to die for his faith. King Herod Agrippa I ordered his execution by the sword (Acts 12:1-2), making James the first apostle to experience martyrdom. His willingness to die for Christ shows how his faith and understanding of Jesus' mission matured over time.5. Strong Silent Type: Despite his prominent role, James' personality and actions are largely silent in the Gospels. Unlike his brother John, who left behind writings, or Peter, who is often outspoken, James' role is defined more by his presence in key moments and his actions, making him a significant but mysterious figure in early Christian history.
