Just numbers. Just information. Even Joab, the ruthless general who had murdered rivals without hesitation, tried to talk him out of it. David did it anyway. And seventy thousand people died in the plague that followed. The sin was not about counting soldiers. It was about trust. David wanted to quantify his security, measure what he could rely on. He forgot who had been his strength all along. When the destroying angel stretched his hand toward Jerusalem, David saw him and cried out to take the punishment himself. And when told to build an altar, and the landowner offered everything for free, David refused: "I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing."Jesus came home to Nazareth. He taught in the synagogue where he had worshiped as a child. The neighbors were astonished by his wisdom and the reports of mighty deeds. But they could not get past what they thought they knew. "Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" They took offense. And Jesus could do no mighty work there. He was amazed at their unbelief. Familiarity had made them blind. They thought knowing his family meant knowing his limits. David trusted his army instead of his God. Nazareth trusted assumptions instead of evidence. Both ended in tragedy.📖 ReadingsFirst Reading: 2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 6, 7Gospel: Mark 6:1-6⏱️ Timeline00:00 Introduction00:15 Reading I - 2 Samuel 24:2,9-1702:29 Psalm Response - Psalm 3208:15 Gospel - Mark 6:1-609:15 Reflection - Seventy Thousand Dead for Counting🎧 Prefer to listen on the go?
