Sex, Drugs & Pirates Mascots

from City Cast Pittsburgh · host City Cast

The Pirates are back and so is their beloved mascot — the shaggy, round, lime green Parrot with the bright yellow beak and a backwards baseball cap. He’s ubiquitous to us now, but he actually has a birthday and a backstory, plus a bunch of wild stories behind the men who’ve worn the suit. We’re with author and former Mr. Met AJ Mass to talk about the sordid history of our Buccos’ best luck charm and biggest curse. Check out AJ’s book, “Yes, It’s Hot in Here: Adventures in the Weird, Woolly World of Sports Mascots,” in print or ebook.  Today’s news! President Joe Biden officially announced his bid for re-election. If you’re new here, Biden announced his 2020 campaign at the Teamsters Hall in Lawrenceville.  Pittsburgh Regional Transit is participating in a national study to see how our transit system lines up against others. You can fill out a survey through Sunday for a chance to win a 31-day pass.  The city is investing more than $18 million to mill and pave 32 miles of city streets this year.
