Sexual Harrassment in Academic Settings

from KUCI: Justice or Just Us?

When people raise the issue of sexual harrassment in the workplace, it is common for persons of all political persuasions to be somewhat dismissive or judgemental, thinking that it isn't really as serious a problem as it's made out to be. Yet sexual harrassment is real, and it can have very personal and emotional consequences for those involved. Moreover, its occurrence is not limited to the corporate setting; it also extends to the academic setting where power relations among professors, graduate students and undergraduates are never equitable. The UCI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of sexual harrassment in an academic setting. Guest: Kirsten Quanbeck, Executive Director of OEOD at UCI.
