SF Giants Gameday: Why two blowouts could be an unsettling sign of what's to come

from SF Giants Gameday

It's hard to imagine the Gabe Kapler era getting off to a worse start than back-to-back blowout losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As the Giants may find out over the next two days, things can still go down from here. Despite losing their first two games of the season by a combined score of 17-2, Kapler's Giants have already used three of their four best starting pitchers and will be without three of their middle-of-the-order hitters. Buster Posey isn't walking through the doors to the clubhouse anytime soon, but the losses of third baseman Evan Longoria and first baseman Brandon Belt due to injury have clearly hurt the Giants at the outset of the season. Kapler's three, four and five hitters on Friday at Dodger Stadium were Pablo Sandoval, who returned to the team as a minor league free agent over the offseason, Alex Dickerson, who was designated for assignment by the Padres last year, and Joe McCarthy, who made his major league debut Thursday and is now 0-for-7 on the year. What should Giants fans expect over the next two days? Is it too soon to evaluate the state of the 2020 club? We answer those questions and more in the SF Giants Gameday podcast.
