SFD 365: Sent with a Salt and Pepper

This week on Sent from Disneyland, we're shaking things up with a pair of vintage Disneyland postcards and a look at one of the park's most practical—and collectible—souvenirs: salt and pepper shakers. Our first postcard takes us back to July 1957, with the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad arriving at Main Street Station. The postcard sender braved a sweltering day at Disneyland, staying from noon until 10 p.m. Then we head to the Rivers of America in 1969 aboard the Mark Twain, before exploring two early Disneyland salt and pepper shaker sets from my collection. From characters and Main Street imagery to the Mark Twain and Columbia, these little souvenirs offer a fun glimpse into Disneyland merchandise of the 1950s and '60s. We'll also look at the history of novelty shakers and the surprising tradition behind the number of holes in the tops of salt and pepper shakers.
