Shades Of Truth
from Inside The Consulting Room - Understanding the Child Behind the Behaviour · host Kim Lee
Send us Fan MailWhat if the first lie is the one we tell ourselves? We open a clear-eyed look at deception by tracing its most common origin: the small inner edits that spare us pain but slowly fracture our sense of self. Rather than shaming the behavior, we map its psychology—how unprocessed emotional experience gets pushed away, how that feels stabilizing in the moment, and how it quietly shapes relationships, decision-making, and identity. We move from theory to practice by naming three core defenses: avoidance, rationalization, and polarized thinking. Avoidance looks like sidestepping hard feedback or delaying a difficult talk; to us it feels safe, to others it feels like their voice vanishes. Rationalization shows up as the refined “yes, but,” a reframing that preserves self-image while rewriting someone else’s experience. Polarized thinking splits people into good or bad, rewarding or disappointing, reducing complexity to control the anxiety of contradiction. Each defense narrows curiosity and blocks the very learning that could help us repair and grow.Across the conversation, we trace the cost of these patterns: internal fragmentation, brittle relationships that demand agreement to stay calm, and a self organized around defense rather than discovery. Then we pivot to integration. We offer concrete ways to face internal contradictions without distortion—naming feelings in the body, replacing “yes, but” with accountable language, trading always and never for specific behavior and impact, and seeking feedback we don’t script. We also set a crucial boundary: you can’t force others to do this work because you want them to. Integrity means practicing clarity and compassion anyway, trusting that grounded truth is more durable than any defensive narrative. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with someone who’s ready to trade certainty for honesty, and leave a review with the one defense you’re ready to retire. Your reflections shape future episodes and help more listeners find this conversation.
