In this episode, Chris and Wendy talk through an early time in their marriage when the shine of new love began to fade, conflicts escalated, and the challenges to maintain intimacy in marriage just seemed to keep coming: * A mother's devastating diagnosis… * Their own unexpected health issues… * The ugly reality of one another's unhealthy coping strategies… * The after-effects of having been raised in the "purity culture" of the late 80s… * And oh… the joys and challenges of welcoming a new child into the family… How can a young couple find a way to grow in faith individually and as a couple, when every day it feels like they are just dodging ferocious predators, stepping on land mines, and trying to navigate a none-too-seaworthy ship through a dense and disorienting fog? (Um, yes, that mix of metaphors is intentional.) And at the same time, how does the grace & kindness of Jesus become more real through the tangible care and comfort of His people in the church? Tune in for an intimate conversation as Chris and Wendy pull back the veil on those days of feeling unmoored, anxious, and overwhelmed—and yet also seen, held, and cared for…  by a God who really honors His promise to be a "very present help in trouble." [And just a quick reminder, since you are one of those people we already  adore because you actually read these descriptions:  if you are enjoying or benefiting from this podcast, we would be even more grateful if you would take just a minute or two to rate it, leave a review, SUBSCRIBE, and tell your friends and neighbors... The Satyricon by Gaius Petronius Arbiter Loyal Books Satyricon (or Satyrica) is a Latin work of fiction in a mixture of prose and poetry. It is believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius, though the manuscript tradition identifies the author as a certain Titus Petronius. As with the Metamorphoses of Apuleius, classical scholars often describe it as a "Roman novel", without necessarily implying continuity with the modern literary form. The surviving portions of the text detail the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius's friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character. It is a rare example of a Roman novel, the only other surviving example (quite different in style and plot) being Metamorphoses written by Lucius Apuleius. It is also extremely important evidence for the Parallel Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans Vol. 3 by Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus Loyal Books Parallel Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans is a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings. The surviving lives contain twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pair consisting of one Greek and one Roman, as well as four unpaired, single lives. Plutarch was not concerned with writing histories, as such, but in exploring the influence of character, good or bad, on the lives and destinies of famous men. The first pair of lives the Epaminondas-Scipio Africanus no longer exists, and many of the remaining lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae and/or have been tampered with by later writers. His Life of Alexander is one of the five surviving secondary or tertiary sources about Alexander the Great and it includes anecdotes and descriptions of incidents that appear in no other source. Likewise, his portrait of Numa Pompilius, an early Roman king, also contains unique information about the early Roman calendar.
