Shame is not yours to carry

from Silent Screams Loud Strenght · host Samantha Avril-Andreassen, Your Host of Silent Screams Loud Strength

Today’s episode is one I hold close to my heart. It’s called: “Shame Is Not Yours to Carry.”If those words make you pause—if something inside you whispers “but it is…”—I want you to keep listening.Because shame has a way of sticking to our skin like it belongs. But it doesn’t.Not yours. Not anymore.Maybe… not ever.Let’s talk about what shame does to us.Shame isn’t just a feeling—it’s an identity thief. It tells you that you’re not just someone who made a mistake…but that you are the mistake. It whispers that your trauma defines you. That your pain makes you weak. That if people really knew you, they’d turn away. And here’s the cruelest part: shame isn’t born inside you. It’s planted there—by someone else’s actions.By abuse. Neglect. Silence. Systems that were meant to protect, but didn’t.Shame is a hand-me-down emotion.Passed to you by people who couldn’t or wouldn’t carry their own accountability. Here’s a truth that might take a moment to land:Shame belongs to the one who caused the harm—not the one who survived it.If you were abused, manipulated, silenced, or made to feel invisible—you may have been told, directly or indirectly, that you were the problem. But you weren’t.You survived what you were never meant to endure. And you adapted in ways that kept you alive—emotionally, mentally, physically. There is no shame in survival. There is only strength. The shame of abuse belongs to the abuser. The shame of betrayal belongs to the betrayer. The shame of abandonment belongs to the one who walked away. Not you.So how did we end up carrying it?Because when we’re young—or vulnerable, or dependent—we don’t always have the words, or the power, to name what’s happening. So instead of thinking, “Something bad happened to me,”we think, “There must be something bad about me.”That shift—from external truth to internal blame—is how shame sinks in.And once it’s there, it shapes everything. How we see ourselves. How we speak—or don’t speak. How we love. How we shrink. But here’s the good news:Just like shame was planted…it can be unearthed.Let’s practice something, right here.Wherever you are, I want you to gently close your eyes—unless you’re driving—and take a breath. In through your nose…Hold…And out through your mouth. Now ask yourself:“What shame am I carrying that isn’t mine?”Maybe it’s the shame of being hurt. The shame of not being believed. The shame of surviving in messy, complicated ways.Picture that shame like a heavy bag you’ve been dragging behind you.Feel its weight. Now imagine… setting it down. You don’t need to carry what doesn’t belong to you.You never did.Releasing shame doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened. It means choosing truth over distortion. It means:Naming what was done to you.Honoring your survival.Speaking your story when you're ready—and staying silent when you're not.Reclaiming your power, your body, your voice. You get to live your life without shame standing in your way.You get to take up space. To feel joy.To speak without apology. You are not what happened to you.You are who you are becoming. If this episode stirred something in you—take care of yourself today.Maybe journal.Take a walk.Talk to a trusted friend.Or just rest. And remember this:Healing doesn’t require you to be perfect. It only asks you to show up.Bit by bit.Step by step. You are already worthy. You are already enough. And the shame? It was never yours to carry.Thank you for being here with me today.Until next time—Be gentle with yourself. You’re doing the work. And I’m proud of you.
