In today's episode, I speak to Shane Sharkey. Shane has been a part of the success of Brookhaven Baseball for years. He was a member of the 2013 team that reached the NJCAA DIII World Series. He was an Assistant Coach on the 2019 team that reached the NJCAA DIII World Series.In this episode, he shares how he recruits future JUCO players. He shares what coaches are looking for when it comes to players that they want to bring into a program from a scouting standpoint.He gives advice to coaches and players going through the recruiting process at different levels.SHOW NOTES[3:13] What's the best thing about junior college baseball that people don't know?[4:19] When it comes to recruiting and that process how late do you usually sign guys?[5:09] What's the tuition like compared to a four-year college?[5:53] Different divisions people don't know about junior college baseball.[6:38] Do you guys get many transfers from four-year colleges?[7:09] What are you guys specifically looking for when it comes to players that you want to bring into your program from a scouting standpoint what are you looking for?[7:50] What are your responsibilities at school?[8:30] What are the hours normally like in season and then offseason?[9:08] There are really no guidelines or rules when it comes to Junior college baseball practice.[9:45] You played at Brookhaven.[10:04] Would you want to be a head coach someday?[10:34] If you go to the high school level would you teach at the high school too?[10:59] I know you played the following year too at out in Bakersfield how did that year go?[11:57] Did you know right away you want to get back into coaching?[13:35] In your own words what would be the advice you would give to people kind of going through that recruiting process and the different levels?[15:57] How do you guys go about helping players or is there or do they do it on their own go from juco to their next stop?[17:09] Are you picking up the phone yourself and calling these schools?[17:56] How many times do you think those coaches read those compared to if you call as a coach?[18:41] What kind of questions is that coach asking you when you've sent information to him?[19:28] How many times would you say you call coaches and do they usually want to go see them or how do they want the player to come to work out for them at their school like how does that work?[20:10] Do college coaches come and watch your guys' games during the season?[20:27] You try to go and watch some high school games how does that work when you're so busy during the season with Brookhaven in college and coaching them?[21:04] What's been the one thing that you've learned in coaching so far in your past several years that you've been doing it since you were done playing?[23:10 Do you work other jobs during the year?[24:54] What would be the advice you would give to someone who wants to get into college coaching?[27:03] Sacrifice is a fantastic word.[27:57] How do you guys go about trying to develop those players who may not be as good as the top-tier guys?[29:20] Would you say the biggest difference is they're hitting or is it fielding?[29:51] Do you guys have a certain philosophy when it comes to hitting an approach?[31:40] Is there a specific system you have for trying to develop infielders?FOLLOW SHANE:Twitter: @CoachSharkeyInstagram: coachsharkeyLinkedIn: Shane SharkeyPatrick Jones Baseball Hosted on Acast.
