Shang Dynasty

In this episode, we explore the Shang dynasty, the first Chinese dynasty supported by clear archaeological and written evidence, tracing its rise from around 1600 to 1046 BCE and examining how oracle bone inscriptions, royal tombs, and remarkable bronze artifacts reveal a powerful and highly organized society. We look at the Shang world through its capital at Anyang, its strong monarchy, its system of ancestral worship, and its advances in urban planning, metallurgy, weaponry, and the earliest forms of Chinese writing. Along the way, we highlight important figures such as King Wu Ding and the warrior leader Fu Hao, while also considering how the Shang shaped the foundations of early Chinese civilization before ultimately falling to the Zhou.
