She Warned Them About Her Dangerous Ex. Then, a Mother and Daughter were Killed

She survived a shooting and gave sworn statements to police, but it still wasn't enough. In December 2022, Meshay Melendez was assaulted and shot at by her boyfriend, Kirkland Warren — a man already facing numerous other charges, including an unresolved murder charge. Investigators ran a danger assessment that scored so high it broke the scale. In the weeks that followed, Warren was repeatedly released from jail; the second release came four days before Meshay and her 7-year-old daughter, Layla Stewart, disappeared without a trace. The episode examines whether more could have been done to prevent their deaths.
