She Won Worlds—Then Questioned Everything
from Small Man Jiu Jitsu · host Robin Fujimura
Phase 4B — Spotify and Podcast Description Lani and Slater came to jiu-jitsu through two completely different paths. Lani started training at 12 while living in Indonesia and eventually built an international competition career. She traveled throughout Asia and the United States, trained up to three times a day, won an IBJJF World Championship at purple belt, and earned her black belt at only 21. But reaching her biggest goal brought an unexpected question: What now? After years of competitions, weight cuts, school, and constant pressure, Lani began feeling burned out. Jiu-jitsu had become so closely tied to her identity that she continued competing even after it stopped being enjoyable. Slater started much differently. He initially drove Lani to practice and filmed her training before she bought him his first gi. He never felt drawn toward competition, but found his own connection to the sport through problem-solving, fitness, personal growth, and community. In this episode, Lani and Slater discuss competition burnout, enjoying the journey, choosing trustworthy mentors, introducing children to sports, and why taking a break from jiu-jitsu doesn’t mean walking away forever. Their stories are a reminder that everyone can take a different path and still find a place on the mats.
