Shelia Modir and Jeffery Kasou Release The Book The Proudest Color

from Young Adult Authors Unplugged From Arroe Collins · host Arroe Collins

Learning that there are others who are similar to oneself can reduce the negative impact of race-related trauma. As Middle Eastern Americans (Iranian and Palestinian) and as clinicians, authors Sheila Modir and Jeffrey Kashou advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion and work toward promoting resilience in children. They strive to apply this knowledge and help children feel proud of their identities and know that their potential is unlimited. When Sheila searched for a picture book that discussed emotions and race to help stock the local hospital’s children’s bookshelves, she was inspired to write her own, and The Proudest Color, based on her research, was borne. Main character Zahra sees the world in vivid color. When she’s happy, she feels a razzle-dazzle pink in her hands. When she’s sad, she feels a deep blue behind her eyes. But she isn’t quite sure how to feel about the color of her skin. Kids at school tell her she is different, but her mother tells her to be proud! Brought to life by Monica Mikai’s stunning illustrations, The Proudest Color is a timely, sensitive introduction to race, racism, and racial pride.
